Herkimer drops first game at home to SUNY Broome 8-7

Herkimer, NY-- The Generals hosted the Hornets of SUNY Broome in their home opener in a snow bank covered Wehrum Stadium this afternoon.  The Generals came out fired up as they took an early lead over the Hornets 1-0 in just the first two minutes of the game.  Unfortunately that would be the only time Herkimer would sit in the leading position as SUNY Broome quickly tied it 1-1 just five minutes later from Hornets freshman attack #2 Johnny Cotton (Brooklyn, NY).  Broome then went on a streak scoring two more goals to hold a comfortable 3-1 lead at the end of the first period.  Herkimer Generals #8 L.J. Redpath (Rome, NY) took control of the second period scoring two goals to tie things up 3-3.  The first goal just two minutes in from an assist by sophomore midfielder #21 Ryan Zimmerman (Rochester, NY) and the second with five minutes left in the half assisted by sophomore long stick #4 Channing Thomas (Norwalk, CT).  The Hornets responded with two more goals, and the half was capped off from a third goal by Redpath unassisted with less than a minute left to leave Herkimer down 5-4.

The third quarter the Generals returned from the half a bit sluggish as they allowed two more goals to drop them to a 7-4 deficit.  Herkimer was able to wake up in the fourth as freshman attack #15 Levi Confer (Verona NY) put one in the back of the net unassisted.  Another Redpath goal thereafter assisted by #1 Jake Williamson (Endicott, NY) closed the gap Herkimer down by one 7-6 with just eight minutes left in the game.  SUNY Broome #18 Joshua Bradford (Johnson City, NY) scored his fourth goal of the game with 6:39 left in the game producing the insurance they needed to clinch the win.  Herkimer was able to score one more by #1 Williamson assisted by Confer but it was just shy of enough as the final score closed 8-7.
