Womens Soccer Fall to Cannoneers on Opening Day

WATERTOWN, NY -- The Generals fought in a back-and-forth contest but ultimately fell 4-3 to the No. 10 ranked Jefferson Canonneers (2-0) in its first game of the 2023 season.

The loss snapped a two-game opening day win streak for the program. They are now 8-2 in its last 10 opening day matches. Additionally, the Generals are now 30-3 since 2019 in games in which they've scored at least three goals.


In the first career college game for many, three Generals registered their first career goals.

Freshman Sarah Davis (Norwich, NY) opened the match with a goal just 45 seconds in, giving the Generals its first lead of the season.

 

The Cannoneers answered back, scoring twice (23', 26') in just three minutes and 22 seconds and took a 2-1 lead into halftime.

Freshman Haylee Buyssee (Keene Valley, NY) made a huge impact off the bench with a tying goal in the 61st minute.

 

It wouldn't be long before the Cannoneers retook the lead. Three minutes later, they answered with a goal in the 61st minute.

Sophomore Mia Lazzara (Westmoreland, NY) replied with a goal of her own in the 76th minute to tie the game at three.

 

The Cannoneers scored the game-winning goal in the 83rd minute to seal the game and hand the Generals its first loss of the season.

The Generals look to avenge the loss with its first game at Wehrum Stadium against Niagara County Community College at 1PM.
