Why play softball for Herkimer College?

There are many reasons some of the nation’s best softball players choose Herkimer College to compete and learn. Below are just a few:

Our opportunities.

Playing for Herkimer College means you’ll start playing in your freshman year and gain exceptional exposure. We play against scholarship schools such as Syracuse University, Binghamton University, LeMoyne College, and College of St. Rose. We have had players sign numerous scholarships at superior programs such as Syracuse, LeMoyne, College of St. Rose, Armstrong Atlantic University, and Cortland State (NY).

Our record.

Herkimer has been very successful over the last decade as a top softball program and national competitor. During this stretch, Herkimer has gone 370-70 with 11 straight Region III Championships from the 2012-2023 seasons, including a World Series Championship in 2013. We have also received two Academic All-American Team of the Year Awards.

Our quest to reach our full potential.

The mission of the Herkimer College softball team is to continue with all of the above successes, by constantly improve ourselves, develop good character, and strive to win another National Championship.

Our style of play.

Aggressive, fun and up-tempo, the Generals’ playing style makes things happen – rather than waiting for things to happen. We always try to dictate how the game is being played on a game-to-game basis and work to manufacture runs. We work to create a perfect combination of skill, speed and power with our athletes. On the mound, we preach consistency and mental toughness with a never-give-in mindset. Defensively, we teach anticipation and instill a no fear, "web gem," go-get-it attitude.

Our rigorous season.

The program is set up as a three-part season. First, we play about 20 games in the fall versus other NJCAA and NCAA schools. When fall ball is complete, usually mid-October, we begin our strength and conditioning program that lasts right up until a week prior to final exams. This allows our student-athletes the necessary time to prepare and be successful in the classroom and on the field. When students return from winter break, we start practice right away in our indoor facilities to prepare for our spring training trip to Myrtle Beach, where we play teams from many states. After that, we return home to begin our 30-game regular season.

Our academic emphasis.

We have been recognized for having a team GPA above 3.0 for many seasons. Herkimer College upholds the highest academic standards for our players. We have one of the top student success rates in the nation, based on our impressive graduation and transfer rates. We provide a high-quality education and a diverse collection of student support services to ensure our athletes reach their goals both on and off the field.

Our field.

Our home field was recently renovated and is one of the best in the country. The many updates include a new infield, state of the art turf batting area, a new hitting area, updated water and electric to the field as well as new drainage for the entire softball field and a new scoreboard and bullpens.

Our affiliations.

Herkimer College is a member of National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), Region III (Region III is comprised of 29 member institutions, making it one of the largest regions within the NJCAA), and the Mountain Valley Collegiate Conference. The NJCAA is the national governing body for two-year college athletics, with over 475 member colleges throughout the United States.
