HERKIMER, NY – For the 25th time in the last 26 years, the Herkimer Generals Men's Soccer Team is headed to the National Championship. The Generals upset the No. 1 team in the country, Genesee, to advance to this year's National Championship in Gastonia, NC.
Just one goal was conceded in both matches combined. The first game saw the number one overall team in the country Genesee take on number five ranked Herkimer. The only goal of the day came from a Seunghun Yoo free kick in the 38th minute of the match.
Both teams competed back-and-forth, registering shots on net, resulting in phenomenal saves. The Generals managed to withstand a rabid Genesee attack in the final few minutes to come away with the one-goal victory.
In the last five matchups between the two teams, four of them have been decided by a single goal.
Herkimer awaits its seeding at the National Championship, which will be unveiled Thursday morning. The Generals were ranked fifth in the latest rankings, which were released almost two weeks ago.
