Herkimer Storms Back for 65-51 Win Over SUNY Broome

On Saturday, Herkimer Women's Basketball overcame an early 23-5 deficit to win a key Region 3 matchup over SUNY Broome by a score of 65-51.  Broome came out hot, led by its star Ava Eichler, who tallied 11 points in the first quarter to help build a big lead, but Freshman guard Hinano Imamura made a key three point, to cut the lead to 15 after the first quarter.

Entering the second quarter, Herkimer made some lineup changes and switched to a man to man defense, for the first time since November, and began to climb its way back into the game.  Broome carried a 31-24 lead into half-time, but Herkimer came storming out in the 3rd quarter, led by Imamura, who recorded four three-pointers in a matter of minutes to give Herkimer the lead, and they never looked back.  They would score 34 points in the quarter, its largest single output in a quarter this season.  The quarter was topped off by a great tip on the defensive end by Freshman forward Lydia Reimer, who chased the ball down the length of the court and finished on the offensive end as she was fouled for perhaps the best play of the season.

"After we came out flat in the 1st quarter, we made some key adjustments and the girls responded.  Their dedication and will to win took over and we walked away with a great team win.  We can only hope that this can springboard us forward in the region.  After a series of tough games, we needed this type of effort."  expressed Head Coach Matt Hazzard.

Herkimer returns to the court Wednesday, Feb 1 to take on SUNY Adirondack as the program celebrates National Women in Sports Day.
