Herkimer Drops Heartbreaker to Mohawk Valley

Herkimer Drops Heartbreaker to Mohawk Valley

On Sunday, Herkimer Women's Basketball dropped a tough Mountain Valley Conference matchup vs cross-town rival Mohawk Valley 50-45.  The game proved to be a defensive battle, as the two teams would go back and forth throughout.

In what ended up being Herkimer's lowest offensive output of the season, the Generals shot only 26% from the floor.  Mohawk came out hot, led by Freshman Sophia Murray, who scored 10 of Mohawk's 13 1st quarter points, but Herkimer would fight back to lead after the first 10 minutes.  The team's would jockey back and forth, as Herkimer held a 2 point lead into halftime, led by Sophomore Jenna Faulkner, who had 8 points, as she went 8-8 from the free throw line.

In what has been an unfortunate trend for Herkimer, the 3rd quarter proved to be the difference maker.  Herkimer held a 4 point lead for most of the quarter, until a controversial call that awarded Mohawk Valley the ball, led to a corner three pointer that sparked a 13-0 run that gave Mohawk a 40-31 lead into the 4th quarter.  Herkimer would storm back with solid defense and great foul shooting to take a lead, but Mohawk's interior size took control with back to back offensive rebound putbacks that proved to be the difference.

"We had an amazing defensive effort to hold them to 50 points.  We accomplished what we wanted to, but in a very tough college atmosphere, we just couldn't find enough ways to score.  Mohawk took away the three point shot from our guards and played hard man to man defense that proved difficult.  It was unfortunate because a win in this game would have positioned us where we want to be in the region, but instead we need to battle back."

This game marked a season sweep of Mohawk over Herkimer.  Each loss for the Generals stems from the 3rd quarter where Herkimer has been outscored 35-8, which has proved to be enough.

Herkimer has the week off and returns to the court on Saturday, January 28 as they host SUNY Broome.
