Dr. Frederick Douglass Opie '87 was a two-time NJCAA All-American defenseman for the Generals in 1982 and 1983. He scored and assisted on goals as part of the Generals' "man up" offense. Fred continued his collegiate lacrosse career at Syracuse University where he played in national championship games in 1984 and 1985. He won post-collegiate club championships with the Long Island Hofstra and Maryland lacrosse club teams in the USLCA and twice earned All-USCLA honors. Fred played professionally for the New York Saints in the Major Indoor Lacrosse League from 1989 to 1990, and he played defense for Team USA's World championship team in 1990. From 1989 to 1992, Fred served as graduate assistant and defense coordinator for the men's lacrosse team at Gettysburg College while earning a master's degree in history at Shippensburg University. He earned a Ph.D. in history from the Maxwell School of Public Citizenship at Syracuse University in 1999 and began a career as a professor of history thereafter. Fred has served on the US Lacrosse Board of Directors since 2006 and has been honored as follows: Hudson Valley Lacrosse Hall of Fame (2005), Herkimer County Community College Alumni Hall of Honor (2006), Men's Lacrosse Junior College Hall of Fame (2009), Croton-Harmon High School Hall of Fame (2010), and Fellowship of Christian Athletes Lacrosse National Service Award (2011)
