Baseball Shortstop Tyler Phillips is the 2015 May Green & Gold Male Athlete of the Month
Herkimer Generals baseball player Tyler Phillips was named Green & Gold Male Athlete for May. A sophomore and Liberal Arts and Sciences: Generals Studies major at Herkimer College, Phillips helped the programs to their most wins in a season, 48, and a third place finish at nationals.
In May Phillips continued to be a consistent part of the Generals lineup, typically at the number two spot. His .542 batting average, .581 on-base percentage and .722 slugging percentage helped the right hander collect 39 hits and 23 runs batted in throughout 21 games, finishing nationally ranked in numerous categories. Phillips was third nationally in hits (84), runs scored (67) and doubles (20), 10th in RBI’s (53), fourth in batting average (.486), 16th in slugging percentage (.676) and double plays, amassing 19 in 50 games played at short stop. His best game at the plate came against Mohawk Valley in an 18-0 win at home. Phillips went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, two doubles and three runs batted in.
“Tyler is one of the best players to ever put on a Herkimer baseball uniform,” said Head Baseball Coach Jason Rathbun. “He helped me win 89 games and appear in two World Series during his tenure. We will miss everything about him as a student-athlete, but more importantly what he brought to the table as a person.”
