#15 Herkimer Battles but Falls to #4 CCRI in Top-15 Showdown, 75–62
On Saturday, #15 Herkimer College made the long trek to take on #4 nationally ranked Community College of Rhode Island Knights in a non-region matchup. The Generals fell by a score of 75-62, in a well-played competition against two nationally ranked programs.
Herkimer jumped took a 20-15 lead in the first quarter behind hot shooting from Sophomore Guard Angelina Deitz (Schnectady), and Freshman point guard Nevaeh Spencer (Brooklyn) going to the rim hard. Deitz would end up with 18 points to lead the Generals, behind a season high 4 three-pointers. Freshman guard Ava Nicholson (Brooklyn), would contribute 4 three's of her own, to lead Herkimer to a 35-31 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, the Knights would show why they are a high ranked team, as they established themselves inside and capitalized on Herkimer's live turnovers, turning into fast breaks. CCRI would outscore Herkimer 23-10 in the third quarter, creating a deficit Herkimer couldn't bounce back from.
Freshman center Junel Beaubrun (Brooklyn), would score 7 pts and add 12 rebounds in the loss, and Sophomore Mariah Freeman would chip-in 7 pts and 6 rebounds for the Generals.
Herkimer returns to action on Sunday, facing Northern Essex Community College.
