The Herkimer Generals Men's Lacrosse team battled through its toughest challenge of the season so far, securing a hard-fought 12-6 victory over Mercer County Community College to remain undefeated at 3-0. After outscoring their first two opponents 56-2, the Generals faced a more determined defensive effort from Mercer but found their rhythm in the second half to pull away.
Herkimer opened the scoring in the first quarter with a power-play goal from sophomore Chris Rose, assisted by Ryan Hoyt. Mercer responded just before the end of the quarter with a goal from Nathan Bialy to keep the game even at 1-1 after the first 15 minutes.
The Generals gained some breathing room in the second quarter, with Lukas Quinn (assisted by Casey Ryan) and Ryan Hoyt (power play, assisted by Chris Rose) giving Herkimer a 3-1 lead. Chris Rose added his second goal of the game to extend the lead before halftime, but Mercer kept fighting, scoring to keep it close at 4-2 heading into the break.
Herkimer's offense erupted in the third quarter, scoring five goals while the defense held firm. Jordan Fox, Eric Attleson, and Alek Murrietta all found the back of the net, with Ryan Hoyt contributing multiple assists. Despite a goal from Mercer's Mason Cloyd, the Generals' offensive depth proved too much to handle.
In the fourth quarter, Jordan Fox struck again, and Owen Pierce added a goal as Herkimer stayed in control. Chris Rose completed his hat trick with an unassisted goal to seal the win. Mercer attempted a late push, scoring three times, but the Generals' strong defensive play secured the 12-6 victory.
With the win, Herkimer moves to 3-0 on the season and now looks ahead to two challenging matchups against Maryland JUCO powerhouses Anne Arundel & CCBC Essex that will test their early-season successes.
