Generals drop third straight to Lakers

(Kyle Lee had five goals against the Lakers Monday).

(Jonathan Camera had one goal and one assist Monday at Wehrum Stadium).

HERKIMER, NY – Rallying back from a seven goal deficit in the first period, the Herkimer Generals men's lacrosse team managed to string together some goals to get back in the game, but Finger Lakes Community College closed the door in the fourth defeating Herkimer 14-11 in regulation at Wehrum Stadium Monday afternoon.

Herkimer 3-3 (1-1) had been playing well on defense in the first half for the entire season until Monday. Within the first five minutes of the first period, Herkimer found themselves down by five (5-0). The Lakers tallied two more goals in the first period before Herkimer's Kyle Lee (Cincinnati, OH) got his team on the board with 2:43 left in the first period, making it 7-1.

Lee's goal was the start of five unanswered goals for the Generals, not allowing a single goal in the second period behind freshman Mario Diaz (New Rochelle, NY). Diaz played the entire game – the first time this season – coming through for his team with an impressive 21 saves.

With the Generals defending well, Tony Karam (New Hartford, NY), Lee, Cristian Ojeda (Ossining, NY) and Jonathan Camera (Staten Island, NY) provided the offensive spark. Lee and Camera both scored unassisted, but Karam and Ojeda both had help from freshman Jeremy Mowrey (Johnstown, NY). Mowrey led each of his teammates perfectly, but more importantly cut the six goal lead down to two (7-5) by halftime.

Herkimer's momentum it gained in the second period diminished in the third period when Finger Lakes bumped the lead back to four within the first minute of the third period. Lee and freshman Michael Fuoco (Kingston, NY) helped, scoring twice for the Generals in the period, but with the Lakers scoring four goals, Herkimer was down by four (11-7) starting the final period.

In the fourth, Herkimer outscored the Lakers 4-3 on goals from Mowrey, Lee and Fuoco – reversing a trend the past few games – but the early deficit proved to be too much for Herkimer, losing the game 14-11.

The Generals next game is Wednesday. They'll host Hudson Valley Community College at Wehrum Stadium. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
