Broncos hand Generals first loss

(Cristian OJeda had one goal against the Broncos on Wednesday).

(Kyle Lee had three goals and one assist against SUNY Delhi Wednesday).

HERKIMER, NY – Allowing the most goals to date against the fifth ranked team in the country, the Herkimer Generals men's lacrosse team lost their first game of the season to SUNY Delhi Wednesday afternoon at Wehrum Stadium 13-5.

Herkimer 3-1 (1-1) had outscored their last three opponents 34-17, seeing multiple contributors help on the offensive end, giving the team a three game win streak.

Wednesday was a different story. Goals didn't comes easy, and shots-on-goal were more on point. Within the first seven minutes of regulation, SUNY Delhi found themselves up 3-0. Herkimer got on the board with 5:02 left in the first after Cristian OJeda (Ossining, NY) scored unassisted.

The goal by the freshman gave his team life, both offensively and defensively, helping Herkimer outplay the Broncos throughout the rest of the first half, matching goals with them to a two goal deficit, 5-3 at intermission. Scoring both goals for the Generals was Kyle Lee (Cincinnati, OH). Each were unassisted, with the second coming from the back of the net when Lee jumped and scored over the top of the goalkeeper. Lee has eight goals this season, leading his team.

In the second half, SUNY Delhi again stringed together goals, this time four unanswered, giving the Broncos a 9-3 lead with 8:33 left in the third. Joel Braun (Troy, NY) answered with a goal of his own on an assist from Lee with 3:04 left in the third, but the five goal deficit proved to be too much for the Generals in the final quarter.

In the net for Herkimer was Mario Diaz (New Rochelle, NY) and Austin Loeffel (Red Hook, NY). Diaz played the first half, allowing five goals but saving 10 shots. Loeffel played the second half, allowing eight goals and saving eight shots.

The next game for the Generals is Saturday (4/5). After playing two games at home, the team will play two consecutive away. On Saturday they'll travel to General Brown High School to play Jefferson Community College. Game time against the Cannoneers is slated for 4:30 p.m.
