Generals defeat Hornets with strong second half

BINGHAMTON, NY – Building on their first win of the season, the Generals men's lacrosse team defeated Mid State Athletic Conference opponent Broome Community College 11-7 at East Middle School on Saturday, outscoring the Hornets 6-2 in the second half.

Herkimer (2-0) had six different players score in the game, causing issues for the Hornets mainly in the second half, leading for only a couple minutes in the first two quarters.

Scoring the first goal of the game was Herkimer's Michael Fuoco (Kingston, NY), on an assist from Captain Tony Karam (New Hartford, NY) with 12:30 left in the first quarter. Fuoco and Karam both finished the game with three goals, combing for eight in the game due to Karam's two assists.

The lead lasted for a minute, seeing the Hornets score, tying the game at one with 11:30 remaining. Jeremy Mowrey (Johnstown, NY) and Jonathan Camera (Staten Island, NY) added two more goals in the first, one assisted by Karam, to keep the game locked at 3-3 at the end of the first. Mowrey finished the game with one goal and one assist, while Camera finished with two goals and two assists.

At half, Herkimer relinquished a 5-4 lead after Karam scored his first goal of the game unassisted with 2:39 left. Broome tied the game twice in the 15 minute quarter, squandering a goal by Herkimer's Kyle Lee (Cincinnati, OH) with 11:18 left in the second. Lee finished the game with one goal and one assist.

In the second half, it took the games 10th lead change for Herkimer to mount a lead. After Karam scored his second goal on an assist from Camera with 12:11 left in the third, Broome answered for the sixth time, tying the game at 6-6. Fuoco, Camera and Karam had enough, scoring three goals in the matter of three minutes, going up by three goals (9-6) with a little over five minutes left in the third quarter. Broome scored their final goal of the game 12 seconds after Camera scored his second goal in the game, bringing the lead within two (9-7).

In the final quarter, behind Austin Loeffel (Red Hook, NY), Herkimer didn't allow a goal, scoring twice – one goal from Fuoco and the other y Joe Braun (Troy, NY) – building a four goal lead (11-7), giving the Generals consecutive wins for the first time this season. Loeffel finished the game saving nine on 11 shots.

In the net during the first half was Mario Diaz (New Rochelle, NY). In 30 minutes, Diaz allowed five goals on 18 shots.

The Generals next game is against Finger Lakes Community College. Herkimer will travel to take on the Lakers Thursday (3/27) at 4 p.m. It will be the team's fourth consecutive game played away from Wehrum Stadium.
