UTICA — There was a strong fragrance of optimism in the Herkimer gymnasium just after 9:00 Sunday morning before the Generals took on Mohawk Valley Community College in the afternoon. 

 

But when it was all said-and-done, Mohawk Valley made their mark in the Region 3 Men's Basketball Final, defeating the Generals 94-76 on Sunday afternoon.

 

The Generals had won the Region 3 Championship for the past two seasons (2017-18 & 2018-19).

 

The Hawks previously defeated Herkimer (22-7) by a combined five points in their previous two matchups this season.

 

After a three point Herkimer lead at halftime, the No. 2 ranked (in NJCAA Div. III) Mohawk Valley went on an 18-0 run in the first 5:34 of the second half, and led by 20 points with 11 minutes left. Herkimer cut the lead to as small 12 points, but couldn't overcome the large deficit.

 

Mohawk Valley's second half run was courtesy of going 9-for-15 from beyond the arc. 

 

Region 3 Player of the Year Jordanny Cuevas-Marte led Mohawk Valley with 31 points (10/17 FG, 6/12 3 PT), four rebounds and five assists.

 

Freshman guard Shykell Brown (Rochester) led Herkimer in scoring with 25 points (7/14 FG), freshman guard Dante Griffin (Utica) added 15 points, five rebounds & five assists and sophomore Ty Desinor (Brooklyn) rounded out the scoring column with 11 points.

 

In the Region 3 Semifinal the day prior, Herkimer defeated No. 3 (in NJCAA Div. III) Onondaga Community College 68-48. 

 

The Generals held the Lazers to a season-low in points and avenged a 91-78 loss in December. 

 

Shykell Brown led the Generals with 21 points (7/13 FG), four rebounds, and three assists, Dante Griffin added 12 points, four rebounds, six assists & five steals, and Solomon Silas produced 11 points & six rebounds.

 

In the latest NJCAA poll, the Generals were ranked No. 8. They await the National Tournament seeding; which will be released on Wednesday March 4th. Herkimer hopes to secure an at-large bid in the tournament; which begins next Tuesday, March 10th at Rochester, Minnesota.
