BROWN AND GRIFFIN LEAD GENERALS TO ROAD WIN AT NORTH COUNTRY

SARANAC LAKE — As the court cleared from the previous women's basketball game, and 'All I Do is Win' by D.J. Khaled blasted on the speakers above, a low-toned voice mumbled softly.

That voice was from the humble Herkimer starting point guard Dante Griffin.

"You hear that song," he paused. "That's how we're going to feel after this game."

It wasn't easy, but Griffin and the Generals pulled out a gritty, offensively-challenging 57-54 win at North Country.

"Since we just played them (two days ago) we knew today was going to be more about mental toughness more than anything," said Griffin. "We had to come out with the right game-plan and the right energy, and we executed in the clutch to get the win."

Griffin (Utica) added 14 points on 4-of-9 shooting and three steals.

Herkimer (12-5) went back-and-forth with the Saints (8-6), trailing 27-26 at halftime, and fell behind by as many as nine points in the second half.

The Generals went on a 16-0 run from 15:03-to-7:54 in the second half to gain a four point lead.

North Country stayed feisty, tying the game three times in the last four minutes. But with 1:33 left, freshman guard Shykell Brown hit a go-ahead three-pointer to give the Generals a three-point lead. After a two-pointer with 31 seconds left, Griffin was fouled and made both attempts, regaining the three point cushion that gave them the victory.

Brown (Rochester) led both teams with 24 points (9/19 FG, 4/10 3 PT).

The Generals go on the road again against Hudson Valley Community College on Saturday Jan. 25, at 1 p.m.
