Generals end Hawks 13-game win streak, sweep season series

(Herkimer's Ken Woodard tied his season-high of 21 points against the Hawks on 'Black Out' night).

HERKIMER, NY – Playing in their most meaningful game of the new year, the #4 Herkimer Generals men's basketball team collected their 10th consecutive win at home Wednesday evening (1/28), defeating Mountain Valley Conference rival #7 Mohawk Valley 76-61, ending the Hawks 13-game win streak in the process.

Herkimer (18-2, 10-1) didn't capture the lead until six minutes in when Carson Murphy (Mohawk, NY) hit his lone three-point field goal of the game, helping the Generals to a one-point lead 14-13. Murphy finished with 11.

It quickly got to double digits with Jamell Johnson (Rochester, NY), Dantre Langhorne (Greenport, NY) and Felix Riascos (Poughkeepsie, NY) nailing multiple jumpers from the perimeter and Ken Woodard (Bronx, NY) connecting on numerous alley oops. Herkimer ended the half on a 13-7 run, highlighted by Johnson hitting a three pointer at the buzzer to make it 48-29. Johnson finished the game with 13.

The first part of the second half also belonged to the Generals, building a 20-point lead (61-41) after Owens hit three's on consecutive possessions. The freshman finished with 11.

Mohawk Valley pressed Herkimer full-court which helped the Hawks get the game within single digits (68-59) with only 2:26 left in regulation, but buckets by Woodard and Johnson put Mohawk Valley in a position where they had to foul, allowing Murphy, Langhorne and Owens to take control of the game from the charity stripe, winning by 15 (76-61).

The Generals next game is on Saturday (1/24). They'll host Clinton Community College in the varsity gym at 3 p.m. Herkimer will carry a seven-game win streak into this one. Clinton will be looking to end a three game skid.
