Generals snap win streak by Hawks
(Pat Dorrian gets the 'and one' call with 1:59 left in regulation, helping the freshman to a team-high 15 Wednesday).
UTICA, NY – Ending Wednesday's (11/12) conference game against Mohawk Valley on a 19-to-8 run in Jorgensen Center, the Herkimer Generals men's basketball increased their current win streak to four, defeating the Hawks 80-65 to remain undefeated amongst DIII competition.
Herkimer (4-1, 2-0) saw the Hawks claw back from an 11 point halftime deficit, coming within four points of tying the game with seven minutes left (61-57), but foul trouble led to two free throws by sophomore Carson Murphy (Mohawk, NY) which silenced the crowd in attendance allowing Herkimer to rip off seven quick points in the next 90 seconds on a Julio Galay (Bronx, NY) layup, Ken Woodard (Bronx, NY) field goal and Jamell Johnson (Rochester, NY) three-pointer to make it 70-57 with 4:43 left in regulation. Murphy finished with eight points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals; Galay finished with 13 points and one rebound; Woodard finished with 13 points, four rebounds and one block; and Johnson finished with 13 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Adding to the solid play for the Generals was guard Dantre Langhorne (Greenport, NY), tipping in a Johnson miss with 3:40 left to keep the lead at 13 (73-60). Langhorne finished with a double double, his first of the season, scoring 14 points and grabbing 10 boards in 23 minutes.
The final three minutes saw Pat Dorrian (Kingston, NY), Galay and Murphy all not miss from the foul line, going five-for-five, ballooning the lead to 15 points by game's end.
The Generals get right back at it this Saturday (11/15) when they travel to take on the Vikings. Hudson Valley is also riding a four game win streak into the game, going undefeated to this point in the season. Game time between both team's is scheduled for 3 p.m.
