Generals take series from Hudson Valley

Herkimer NY- The Herkimer Generals traveled to Troy, NY to take on the HVCC Vikings in the first Region III matchup of the season. The Generals and Vikings battled for 10 innings, but the offense exploded for 6 runs in the 10th inning to secure the road win 17-11. Ryan Packard (Oneonta,NY) closed out the 9th and 10th innings to receive the win on the day, striking out 4 in 2 innings. Packard moves to 3-0 on the season, pacing the pitching staff. Game 2 got rained out and the make-up date is set for later in the season.

On Saturday the Generals returned home for the home opener on Saturday at Little Falls Veterans Memorial Field. The Generals received a quality starts and wins from Ethan Patch (Whitehall, NY) and Derek Hotzler (Cobleskill, NY), setting the pace on the day for the Generals. Patch went 6 innings, while giving up only 1 earned run, striking out 6. Hotzler went 4 innings and gave up 2 hits on the day with 1 earned run and striking out 5. The Generals won the first game 8-2 and the second, 12-1.

The Pitching staff racked up 43 strike outs in the series while allowing 6 earned runs in 22 innings. Sophomore pitcher Greg Farone (Schenectady, NY) had 11 strike outs in his start, grabbing the hard luck no decision in the series opener.

The Generals offense had 37 hits, scored 37 runs and hit 10 homeruns in 3 games series, receiving 3 Homeruns from Mike Gunning(Rocky Point, NY), 3 from Sal Carricato(Farmingville, NY) and 1 from Don Wille(Gilboa, NY), Ethan Duda(Latham, NY), Ty Gallagher(Saugerties, NY) and Jovani Wiggs(Amsterdam, NY). Gunning added 8 hits on the weekend, 6 RBI's and 6 runs while Carricato had 4 hits and 8 RBI's.

Head Coach Jason Rathbun added, "it was nice to get some quality starts on the mound on Saturday and watch our offense continue their development. These are big wins for us early in regional play."

The Generals move to 9-4 on the season and travel to Columbia Green on Tuesday (4/5) for another Region III double header, starting at 2 PM.
