Little Falls, NY - It's on to the Region III Final Four for the Herkimer Generals.
The Generals advanced to the Final Four with a sweep of the Genesee Community College Cougars on Sunday afternoon at Vets Park in Little Falls. The wins, by scores of 9-6 and 5-3, improve Herkimer's record to 29-2 on the season as they raised their current win streak to 18 games.
In Sunday's opener, the Generals battled back from a 6-4 deficit with a 4 run 5th inning and added 1 more insurance run in the 7th for the 3 run victory. Frank Wayman (Horseheads, NY) went 3-4 with a home run while Matt Tobin (Newport, NY) added 2 hits as well. Dakota Britt (Rockwell, TX) reached base 3 times from his leadoff spot in the order.
Trey Princiotto (Horseheads, NY) went the first five innings on the mound for the Generals before yielding to Ethan Patch (Whitehall,NY) for the final four innings of work. Patch went 4 scoreless innings, giving up only 1 hit while striking out 9 GCC batters.
Game 2 saw Herkimer jump out to 4-0 lead before holding off a Genesee rally and closing out the best of 3 series with the 5-3 win. Greg Farone (Schenectady, NY) was dominant on the mound for the Generals, striking out 15 batters and only allowing one hit in his 6 innings on the mound. David Montalvo III (Bethlehem, NY) got the save, getting the last 4 outs while striking out 2.
Next up for the Generals, the #1 seed in the Region III Final Four, is a date with the # 4 seed from Erie County Community College on Friday, May 14th at 2:00 PM at Vets Park in Little Falls. These two teams split a doubleheader in Little Falls in late March. That game will be followed at 5:00 with the # 3 seeded Finger Lakes Lakers taking on the second seeded Niagara County Community College Thunderwolves. All games for the double elimination tournament will take place at Vets Park in Little Falls from May 14-16.
