Herkimer Baseball opens 2021 Campaign with sweep of Suffolk CCC

Granite Springs, NY - It's been a long 22 months, but for the first time since the 2019 NJCAA Division III World Series, the Herkimer Generals baseball squad hit the field to take on Suffolk County Community College in a doubleheader in Granite Springs, NY on Sunday, March 21. Using strong pitching and timely hitting, the Generals swept the Sharks by scores of 5-1 and 8-3 to start the 2021 campaign with a 2-0 record. With the wins, Herkimer is now ranked # 7 nationally in this week's NJCAA Division III Baseball Poll.

In Game 1, Herkimer used a 4 run fifth inning to get the breathing room needed to secure the win. Senior Anthony Raimo, Jr (Altamont, NY) had 2 hits and 2 RBI's in the game while Freshman Kyle Caccamise (Hopewell Junction, NY) also chipped in with 2 hits, including a double. Four Herkimer pitchers combined to limit the Sharks to just 4 hits while racking up 11 strikeouts. Brandon Breakell (Loudonville, NY) got the win, pitching 2 innings of 2 hit ball while striking out 4. Trey Princiotto (Horseheads, NY) pitched the last 3 innings and also struck out 4 batters. Ryan Peters (Watertown, NY), who got the opening game start, and Hiromasa Tanaka (Tokyo, Japan) each pitched one inning in the victory.

The Generals brought out the bats in the Game 2 win, highlighted by home runs by Sophomore Dom Fasolo (Whitesboro, NY) and Dakota Britt (Hopewell, Texas). Raimo, Jr had 2 more hits while Matthew Tobin (West Canada, NY) pitched in with 2 hits and 2 RBI's. 6 different pitchers took the mound in the nightcap, with Eddie Rogers (Little Falls, NY) earning the win. Greg Farone (Schenectady, NY) got the start, striking out 4 and allowing only 1 hit in 2 innings of work.

The Generals open Region III play on Saturday and Sunday, March 27th and 28th as they do battle with the Erie Community College Kats in a home and home series. Herkimer will travel to Buffalo on Saturday to take on the Kats and then host them on Sunday at Veterans Memorial Park in Little Falls, which will be the location of all the Generals home games this season. Both doubleheaders are scheduled for 1:00 starts.
