Herkimer, NY - After a rainout on Saturday, the Herkimer Generals opened the Eastern Division portion of their 2019 season by sweeping the Mohawk Valley Hawks on Sunday afternoon by scores of 5-1 and 8-4. The Generals, who are currently #9 in the latest NJCAA Division III Poll, raised their record to 11-2 with the two wins over their rivals from Utica.
In Game 1, Herkimer pitcher Cole Miller (Elmhurst, IL) was the story as he went the distance to get the win. Miller struck out nine and scattered five hits over 7 innings in a solid performance. Cam Collett (Saratoga, NY) went 2 for 4 and knocked in 2 runs and Brendyn Stillman (Waverly, NY) was on the basepaths the entire game, going 1-1 and drawing 3 walks from the leadoff spot.
The Generals had to battle back in Game 2, falling behind by a score of 4-0 before scoring six runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead they would never relinquish. The key blow in the inning was Brian Forbes (Rocky Point, NY) two run double that started Herkimer's big inning. Matt Parkinson went 3-3 in Game 2, including a tremendous home run in the sixth inning that went well over the fence in left center field. Ryan Lanaro (Schenectady, NY) battled threw the first four innings to get the win while Ben Wager (Johnstown, NY) came in relief and threw three great innings to shut the door on the Hawks, allowing no hits and striking out two.
Next up for Herkimer is a home date with Cayuga Community College on Thursday, April 9. The doubleheader is due to start at 2:00 PM.
