Terashima clutch in sweep of Vikings
TROY, NY – Facing their 10th Mountain Valley Conference opponent in a row on Sunday (4/26), the Herkimer Generals baseball team collected their 11th doubleheader sweep of the season, defeating Hudson Valley 7-4 and 6-0, getting a game-winning hit from outfielder Taishi Terashima to set the tone in game one.
Herkimer (25-3) lost a 4-0 lead in game one, letting Hudson Valley score four runs in the sixth and seventh innings, giving starter Brandon Nylin (Hyde Park, NY) the no decision, needing Michael Harrington (Glens Falls, NY) to come into relief in the sixth after Nylin couldn't record an out. Harington finished the game - throwing the final three innings – only allowing one run on one hit, getting his fifth win (5-1) of the season. Nylin went five innings and was credited with allowing three runs on three hits.
As mentioned previously, Terashima (Hiranai, Japan) was the player to hit the game winner. The sophomore - who only had one RBI in his last four games - came through with his only hit, singling to collect his 15th run batted in this season. Herkimer ended up scoring three runs in the final inning.
Joining Terashima with a solid doubleheader performance was Patrick Dorrian (Kingston, NY) and Chris Rave (Middletown, NY). Both players collected three RBI. Dorrian went 2-for-8 while Rave went 2-for-6, helping both players add to their team lead in RBI. Dorrian has 33 runs batted in while Rave has 31.
Helping Herkimer to their 27th home run of the season was John Boland (Rhinebeck, NY). The sophomore hit his second home run of the season in game one, helping the Generals lead the nation in that category. Second to Herkimer in home runs is Eastfield College with 22. The Harvesters have played eight more games than the Generals this season however.
Pitching in game two against the Vikings was Joe Nellis (Johnstown, NY) and Joe DeSarro (Frankfort, NY). Nellis got the start, throwing six innings of shutout baseball for his fourth win (4-0) of the season, helping him to a 0.48 ERA this season. DeSarro came in relief of Nellis, not allowing a run in one inning of work.
Up next for the Generals in another conference opponent, Fulton-Montgomery Community College. The Raiders are 2-4 in their last six games and 10 games under five hundred (9-19). As for Herkimer, they have won 17 consecutive games which includes 13 against the Mountain Valley Conference. The Generals travel to play the Raiders on Tuesday (4/28).
