Generals split series with Royals
HERKIMER, NY – Coming within one week of not playing a single game due to poor weather conditions, the Herkimer Generals baseball team continued their season at home Saturday (4/11), splitting with Schenectady, losing game one 14-13 and winning game two 20-0.
Herkimer (9-3) had a commanding 10-4 lead going into the fourth inning, but starter Mike Harrington (Glens Falls, NY) couldn't hold off an eventual eight run inning by the Royals which in return relinquished the lead (12-10). Joey Butler (Ballston Lake, NY) and Will Apps (Cicero, NY) would come in relief, but it wasn't enough to help the Generals get their first conference win of the season.
Game two however did see Herkimer get their first conference win, racking up 18 hits to the Royals one. Pitching in game two was Patrick Merryweather (Baldwinsville, NY). The lefty threw a complete game one hitter, only needing five innings with the offense accumulating 20 runs.
Helping the Generals to their best offensive output of the season was Christian Malave (Milford, CT), Jake Rouse (Milford, CT), Tyler Phillips (Hancock, NY), Eric Downey (Colonie, NY), John Boland (Rhinebeck, NY) and Patrick Dorrian (Kingston, NY). Malave and Rouse both led the Generals with 4RBI each thanks to home runs. It was Malave's third and Rouse's second round tripper of the season.
Getting three RBI in game two was Phillips. The short stop went 3-for-4 at the plate with one double. Behind Phillips with 2RBI a piece was Downey and Boland. Combined, both Downey and Boland scored three runs. Getting the final RBI for the Generals was Dorrian. The freshman went 1-for-1 thanks to three total walks. He also managed to score three runs.
Herkimer will now travel to play Schenectady in another doubleheader on Sunday (4/12). Game times are 1 and 3 p.m.
