Rally falls short as Herkimer season ends with loss to Rhode Island at DIII World Series
Greeneville, Tennessee - Down by 2 going to the bottom of the 9th, the Herkimer Generals had already pushed one run across and had the bases loaded with 2 out before Rhode Island induced a game ending ground ball to end the Generals season with a 6-5 loss in the second round of the NJCAA Division III World Series in Greeneville, Tennessee. The loss gives Herkimer a final 2019 record of 35-6-2.
Cedric Rose (Pittsfield, MA) hit a solo shot in the 4th inning and went 2 for 4. Vito Castronovo (Utica, NY) also had 2 hits, which included a double, and knocked in a run. Cole Miller (Elmhurst, MA) took the loss on the mound, going 5 innings and giving up 8 hits and 5 runs and striking out 6. Dale Stanavich (Amsterdam, NY) pitched 4 solid innings to keep the Generals in striking distance, giving up only 2 hits and 1 run while striking out 6.
The trip to the Division III World Series was the 7th under Coach Jason Rathbun in his 15 years as head coach at Herkimer. The Generals, despite many key losses, will have many players returning in 2020 who played key roles on this year's squad as they will look to continue their pursuit of a National title.
